Starlink vs DIRECTV: keep the satellite, stream DIRECTV, or both?
DIRECTV sells TV two ways, by dish and as an app. Starlink sells internet. Here’s how the combinations compare on price, agreement, locals and sports.
DIRECTV satellite TV doesn’t use the internet, so it keeps working beside Starlink. DIRECTV’s streaming service runs over Starlink with no TV dish, but its local channels depend on where it thinks you are. A cheaper live-TV app over Starlink is the third option.
Starlink has no TV service, and we found no DIRECTV offer that includes Starlink, so it’s two bills. The board has DIRECTV’s prices as listed on Nov 3, 2026, for the plans named. DIRECTV’s pages showed its default market, Dallas, TX, because we entered no ZIP; your ZIP can change the price and the sports fees.

On price alone, the streaming options come in under the satellite package at today’s listed prices. The real differences are the agreement, the dish, and how each one finds your local channels.
Keep DIRECTV satellite and add Starlink internet
If you’re happy with DIRECTV’s lineup, keep it and let Starlink replace your DSL or geostationary internet. DIRECTV’s live channels arrive through its dish, not the internet, so a short Starlink dropout during a Texas thunderstorm doesn’t freeze the game. As listed on Nov 3, 2026, ENTERTAINMENT is $94.99 a month for 24 months, $104.99 with the required $10 TV Access Fee, plus taxes and fees. DIRECTV says taxes, surcharges, add-ons and its other fees sit outside the price lock, and after the agreement you go month to month at then-current prices.

The second dish needs its own spot. DIRECTV wants its dish pointed at an unblocked southern sky, with no trees or buildings in the way. Starlink says it does best with open sky over the dish, though a partly blocked view often still works. Keep each dish out of the other’s view. The DIRECTV install page we read gives no spacing figure for a Starlink dish, and Starlink doesn’t publish one for a nearby TV dish. The only figure we found is DISH’s, for its own dishes: at least 10-20 ft apart. Our reading: that’s a sensible starting point, not a DIRECTV rule.
Will Starlink interfere with the TV signal? Starlink’s obstruction map shows the geostationary belt as a clear band, and Starlink doesn’t transmit through that band, so it stays clear of the geostationary satellites TV dishes point at. Our reading: from the US, the equator lies to the south, so the empty geostationary band Starlink describes falls in the southern part of the sky. Starlink itself doesn’t name a direction.
DIRECTV’s streaming service over Starlink
DIRECTV’s streaming service carries DIRECTV channels as an app, with no dish and no installer. As listed on Nov 3, 2026, ENTERTAINMENT on your own device is $89.99/mo plus taxes and fees, and CHOICE and higher packages add a Regional Sports Fee of up to $23.99/mo.
Speed is fine. DIRECTV recommends at least 25 Mbps; Starlink lists 80–100 Mbps download, with 15–35 Mbps upload, expected on Residential 100 Mbps. Location is the risk. DIRECTV says: “Your device may need to be in your billing area to watch certain programming.” Starlink says its IP location can be several states away from your real location, and that a “not in your region” error is likely an IP geolocation mismatch.
Our reading: on Starlink, DIRECTV’s app may think your living-room TV is out of town. We haven’t tested it ourselves. If you’re already a DIRECTV customer, try the app on Starlink before you take the dish down.
Or a different live-TV service
Leaving DIRECTV doesn’t mean DIRECTV’s app. YouTube TV’s main plan is $82.99/mo and Sling Orange is $45.99/mo plus taxes, both as listed on Nov 3, 2026. YouTube TV sets locals from your home ZIP and may ask to verify through your device’s location, which leans less on the IP address. Our live TV services comparison lines up price, streams, DVR, locals and speed for six services.
Local channels and sports
Sports often decide this. Three points, all as listed on Nov 3, 2026:
- NFL Sunday Ticket is sold through YouTube. NFL Sunday Ticket with a YouTube TV plan, new users: $240 or 8 payments of $30. YouTube says: “Watch instantly on any device with no 2-year contract or a satellite dish, offering monthly installments and unlimited in-home streaming.” Sunday Ticket covers out-of-market games; locals come from a YouTube TV plan.
- In-market games air on local stations. YouTube says its Sports Plan, $64.99/mo, gives you local NBC, CBS, FOX and ABC for in-market matchups. An antenna gets the same stations with no internet.
- Regional sports channels cost extra on DIRECTV in both forms, from the CHOICE package up, and vary by ZIP. Check the channel at your address before you switch anything.
Live streams also run a little behind the broadcast; YouTube TV documents a broadcast delay. Our live sports guide goes deeper, and the local channels guide covers the antenna route.
Leaving the satellite agreement early
DIRECTV says early termination fees apply up to $480, prorated at $20 per month over the 24-month term.
| Months left on DIRECTV | Early termination fee |
|---|---|
| 6 | $120 |
| 12 | $240 |
| 18 | $360 |
| 24 | $480 |
Because the fee is charged per month left, the math is the same at any point in the agreement. Our arithmetic at today’s listed prices: for each month left, leaving costs $20 in fees plus $82.99 for YouTube TV, or $102.99 in all, against $104.99 to stay on DIRECTV satellite. Leaving comes out $2 a month ahead, before taxes. So the fee rarely decides it on its own; your locals, your teams and the dish do. The TV bill calculator runs it with your own bills.
What to weigh before dropping the dish
- Streaming depends on the Starlink dish. Starlink says rain, snow or hail at the heavier end can interrupt service for a moment. Satellite TV keeps playing through a Starlink dropout, though its own dish has weather limits too.
- Evenings are busier. Residential Max outranks the 100 and 200 Mbps Residential tiers, so homes on those two are likelier to slow down on a congested network.
- Location rules can bite. DIRECTV’s app may need your device in your billing area, and Starlink’s IP geolocation can be several states off.
- Live streams lag the broadcast. YouTube TV says live streams have a broadcast delay and lets you lower it.
- Prices here are for DIRECTV’s default Dallas market. Your ZIP sets your price and your regional sports fee.
Sit this one out if…
- you’re early in DIRECTV’s 24-month agreement: the early termination fee is $20 for each month left, up to $480
- your teams are on a regional sports channel that only your DIRECTV package carries at your ZIP
- you want to move to DIRECTV’s streaming service mainly to keep your locals: check how its app treats your location on Starlink before you cancel the dish
- you don’t yet know whether streaming can replace DIRECTV: check your sky, your locals and your channel lineup before ordering, because Starlink’s referral terms expect customers who mean to keep it
- you have cable or fiber internet at your address: stream over that and skip the second dish
What gamers and cord-cutters ask
Is Starlink better than DIRECTV?
They do different jobs. DIRECTV sells TV, by satellite dish or as a streaming service. Starlink sells internet and has no TV service. The useful comparison is DIRECTV satellite against a streaming service (DIRECTV’s own or another) running over Starlink.
Can you have DIRECTV and Starlink together?
Yes. DIRECTV satellite TV comes down through its own dish and doesn’t use the internet, so it works beside Starlink. Give each dish its own view: DIRECTV wants its dish aimed at an unblocked southern sky, and Starlink needs open sky of its own.
Does DIRECTV sell or bundle Starlink?
Not that we found. The DIRECTV package pages we read on Nov 3, 2026 offered no Starlink internet, and Starlink describes no TV bundle of any kind. DISH, a different company, resells Starlink; see Starlink and DISH.
Does DIRECTV’s streaming service work with Starlink?
On speed, yes: DIRECTV recommends at least 25 Mbps, and Starlink lists 80–100 Mbps download, with 15–35 Mbps upload, expected on Residential 100 Mbps. The risk is location: DIRECTV says your device may need to be in your billing area for some programming, and Starlink says its IP geolocation can be several states off.
Why does DIRECTV’s streaming app show a home-location error on Starlink?
DIRECTV says some programming needs your device in your billing area, and Starlink says its IP geolocation may place you several states away. Our reading: the app may think you’re traveling. Our local channels guide covers the fixes.
Could Starlink interfere with DIRECTV satellite TV?
Starlink says it does not send or receive through the geostationary belt where TV satellites sit, so it does not interfere with them. On the roof, keep each dish out of the other’s view.
How does Starlink compare with DIRECTV satellite during bad weather?
Both can drop. Starlink says rain, snow or hail at the heavier end can interrupt service for a moment. DIRECTV’s dish wants an unblocked southern sky, free of trees and buildings. An antenna for local channels is the one source that needs neither.
