Leaving DISH or DIRECTV for streaming over Starlink: the exit checklist
The order that keeps you from paying twice or losing your locals: test streaming first, price the exit fee, and return the equipment with proof.
- Starlink's US help center describes no TV service or TV bundle, so leaving satellite TV means choosing a streaming service, an antenna or both for your channels.
- DISH lists an early termination fee of $20 for each month left on its 2-year commitment (as listed Nov 3, 2026).
- DIRECTV's satellite terms list an early termination fee of up to $480, prorated at $20 a month over the 24-month agreement (as listed Nov 3, 2026).
- Test locals, sports, DVR and every TV over Starlink while the satellite service still works; the early-exit fee is the one step you can't take back.
- Get the equipment return steps, deadline and unreturned-item charges in writing, and keep the tracking receipt until the final bill clears.
Set up and test your streaming TV over Starlink first, and call DISH or DIRECTV only once every TV in the house works without the satellite box. The early termination fee is the one step you can’t undo, so price it before you pick a date.
Starlink’s US help center describes no TV service and no TV bundle (we searched it on Nov 3, 2026), and DISH, which resells Starlink, says it doesn’t offer a DISH TV and Starlink bundle either. So leaving satellite TV is two separate changes: internet from Starlink, and channels from a streaming service, an antenna or both. This checklist covers the TV side, in the order that keeps the overlap short.
The order of steps
- Get Starlink running first. Live with it for a week of evenings before you judge it. Starlink’s help center calls 6 pm to 11 pm local time peak hours, when speeds can be slower, and that’s also when most people watch TV.
- Choose what replaces the satellite channels. A live-TV streaming service, an antenna for your local stations, or both. The live TV services comparison and the local channels guide cover the options.
- Run a test week with the satellite service still on. You pay both TV bills for that week. The overlap is what buys you a way back if something fails.
- Price the exit. Find the months left on your agreement and multiply by the fee (next section).
- Call to cancel and ask for return instructions. Write down the confirmation number, the return deadline and what each unreturned item would cost.
- Ship the equipment back with tracking.
- Check the final bill for the fee you expected and nothing else.
Here is the same plan as a three-week timeline:
| When | DISH | DIRECTV |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | Starlink installed; streaming service chosen; DISH still active | Starlink installed; streaming service chosen; DIRECTV still active |
| Week 2 | Test week: locals, sports, DVR, every TV, evenings | The same test week |
| Week 3 | Call DISH: the fee is $20 for each month left; ask for the return steps in writing | Call DIRECTV: the fee is $20 a month left, up to $480; ask for the return steps in writing |
| After the call | Pack and ship the boxes as instructed; keep the tracking number | The same |
| Next bill | Check the fee and any equipment charge | The same |
What leaving early costs: DISH and DIRECTV side by side
Both companies sell satellite TV on a two-year agreement and charge for leaving before it ends. As listed on Nov 3, 2026 for new customers:
| DISH, America’s Top 120 | DIRECTV satellite, ENTERTAINMENT | |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly price | $94.99, price locked for 2 years (1 TV, Hopper 3 DVR, local channels) | $104.99 with the required $10 TV Access Fee, on a 24-month agreement |
| Early termination fee | $20 for each month left | Up to $480, prorated at $20 a month over 24 months |
| After the term | The then-market price, currently $107.99 | Month to month at then-current prices |
Taxes and add-ons sit outside both prices, and DIRECTV’s page showed prices for a default Dallas, Texas location. Existing customers may pay something else, so your own bill is the number to use, and your account shows the months left.
By our arithmetic the two fees work out the same way: 24 months left costs $480, 12 months costs $240 and 6 months costs $120.
When paying the fee beats waiting out the contract
Because both fees are charged per month left, one comparison works at any point in the agreement. For each month left, leaving costs $20 plus your new TV bill, and staying costs your satellite bill. Our arithmetic at the prices listed on Nov 3, 2026, before taxes:
| Switch to | New TV bill | Plus $20 per month left | Against DISH at $94.99 | Against DIRECTV at $104.99 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube TV main plan | $82.99 | $102.99 | Staying is $8.00 a month cheaper | Leaving is $2.00 a month cheaper |
| YouTube TV Sports Plan | $64.99 | $84.99 | Leaving is $10.00 a month cheaper | Leaving is $20.00 a month cheaper |
| Sling Blue | $45.99 | $65.99 | Leaving is $29.00 a month cheaper | Leaving is $39.00 a month cheaper |
| Philo Essential plus an antenna | $25.00 | $45.00 | Leaving is $49.99 a month cheaper | Leaving is $59.99 a month cheaper |
A worked example: 10 months left on DIRECTV. The fee is $200. Staying costs 10 × $104.99, or $1,049.90. Leaving for YouTube TV’s main plan costs $200 plus 10 × $82.99, or $1,029.90, so it comes out $20 ahead over those 10 months. Leaving for Sling Blue costs $659.90, which is $390 ahead.
The rows aren’t equal swaps. YouTube TV describes its Sports Plan as a lower-cost plan built around 30+ channels of games, sports talk and news. Sling carries ABC, FOX and NBC only in select markets, and Philo carries no local channels, so those two lean on an antenna for locals. The antenna is a one-time purchase the table leaves out.
One more line belongs in the math if Starlink would be a new bill rather than a replacement for internet you already pay for. Your Starlink price depends on the service address. Before any address is typed in, the order page we read on Nov 3, 2026 put the 100 Mbps Residential tier at $49.50 a month; $44 and $55 have also turned up since Oct 29, and that tier is only sold in select areas. The TV bill calculator runs the comparison with your own bills.
Test week: locals, your sports, DVR and every TV
Run these checks on the TVs you actually use, at the hours you actually watch.
- Local channels. Streaming services pick your locals in different ways. YouTube TV uses your home ZIP code and may ask to verify your area through your device’s location. Hulu + Live TV bases local stations on your physical location. Fubo uses GPS on phones and the IP address on TVs and computers. Starlink says its IP geolocation can be several states from your real location. Our reading: an app that goes by IP can show another city’s stations, so check each local on the big TV, not only on your phone.
- Your teams. Find two upcoming games for each team you follow and confirm the service carries them at your address. The sports guide covers regional sports channels and their fees.
- DVR. A satellite DVR such as DISH’s Hopper records to a box in your house. Streaming DVRs live in the cloud: YouTube TV keeps each recording for 9 months, Philo for a year. Set up your series recordings again before the box goes back.
- Every TV at once. Count how many TVs play at the same time on your busiest night. YouTube TV allows 3 streams, Hulu 2, Philo 3, Sling Orange 1 and Sling Blue 3.
- Weather. Starlink says moderate to heavy rain, snow and hail can cause momentary service dropouts. Watch through one stormy evening if the forecast gives you one.
An antenna is the backup for local stations. NEXTGEN TV’s FAQ says over-the-air TV doesn’t need an internet connection, so broadcast channels keep playing when Starlink drops.
Sending the equipment back
Ask about the hardware during the cancellation call, not after it. Ask for the answers by email or chat so you have them in writing:
- Which items must go back: receivers, remotes, access cards, and whether they want the dish on the roof.
- How they want it shipped: a prepaid box, a label or a drop-off point.
- The deadline.
- What each unreturned item costs.
We haven’t confirmed either company’s current charge for unreturned equipment, so this checklist prints no figure. Photograph the serial labels before you seal the box, ship with tracking, and keep the receipt until the final bill shows no equipment charge.
Who should keep satellite TV for now
Satellite TV has a few advantages on a Starlink home that are hard to replace.
The limits of streaming over Starlink:
- Streaming depends on the Starlink dish. Satellite TV channels come down through their own dish and don’t use the internet.
- Evenings are busier. On a crowded network, Starlink says, the 100 and 200 Mbps Residential tiers slow before Residential Max does, and that is exactly when the family sits down to watch.
- App-based locals can come from the wrong market, because Starlink’s IP location can be several states off.
- Streaming prices move. Hulu says its current Live TV prices apply to new subscriptions as of Sept 23, 2026, while DISH locks its package price for the two-year term (taxes and add-ons excluded).
Wait if:
- You have more than a year left and the service you’d switch to costs close to your satellite bill, as YouTube TV’s main plan does against DISH.
- Your locals fail both ways: the app shows another market and an antenna can’t reach your towers.
- Trees crowd the sky over your house. Run the ping, NAT and streaming check first; Starlink says a tree or roofline that stays in the dish’s view can cause on-and-off outages.
- Someone at home relies on a channel that no streaming service at your ZIP carries.
For the next step on the TV side, the DISH page and the DIRECTV page compare keeping each service against streaming.
Sit this one out if…
- fiber or cable already reaches the house: for online play a wired line is normally the lower-ping pick
- you run game servers or need an open NAT in every title: home plans sit behind shared IPv4 addresses (see NAT type)
- the plan is a few months of internet, one tournament weekend or a single trip
- you’d keep it only if month one is flawless: Starlink’s referral terms are written for customers who intend to stay, so make the call before ordering
What gamers and cord-cutters ask
What does DISH charge to leave before the 2 years are up?
DISH lists an early termination fee of $20 for each month left on its 2-year commitment (as listed Nov 3, 2026). Twelve months left works out to $240 by our arithmetic.
What is DIRECTV's early termination fee?
DIRECTV's satellite terms list a fee of up to $480, prorated at $20 a month over the 24-month agreement (as listed Nov 3, 2026). Your account shows how many months you have left.
Do I have to return my DISH or DIRECTV receiver?
Ask during the cancellation call which items must go back, by when, and what an unreturned item costs; we haven't confirmed either company's current charges. Get the answers in writing and ship with tracking.
When does leaving DISH early come out ahead?
If a streaming service carries your locals and teams at your ZIP and costs less than your satellite bill minus $20 for each month left, leaving usually pays. If it doesn't, wait out the commitment.
